The holiday season is my favorite time of year.  People are just more caring during this season.  Families enjoy each development blogother’s company around a decorated tree, friends relish a slice of pie at the dinner table, neighbors exchange ornate cookies, colleagues decorate the office with cheer, and even strangers wish each other happy holidays in passing.  It is typical this time of year to reflect on all that we have and when I do, I can’t help but notice the many gifts afforded to us by the natural world.  The desk at which I sit, clothes I am wearing, and snack at my side are all courtesy of plants.

So when you make your gift giving list this season, consider including Mother Nature as one of the recipients of your generosity.  We are reliant on her nurturing us and ‘tis the season to give back.  A donation to The Dawes Arboretum goes into spreading the love of trees, history, and nature in our community.  Open to the public free-of-charge and providing many education programs at no or low-cost, The Arboretum’s mission is to share our appreciation for everything our natural world provides.

In thinking about how I am going to give back and value nature in my life, I have made a list of New Year’s resolutions.  I hope you will pick a couple of items from this list and join me in a happy, healthy new year!

DSCN0289 (1) Erin’s New Year’s Resolutions

  • Take a walk through an unpaved area at least once a week.
  • Eat and appreciate more plants.
  • Plant a native Ohio tree.
  • Recycle every scrap of paper I use, even store receipts and fortune cookie notes.
  • Renew my membership to The Dawes Arboretum.

Making a donation to The Arboretum is easy and convenient—just visit the “Support” tab on The Arboretum website.  Gift memberships are perfect presents for the holidays!  Don’t forget that The Arboretum is a non-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law!

luminary.ser 057An unforgettable evening that will bring joy to all—start with a leisurely car ride through our South End Auto Tour illuminated by 2,000 candle-lit luminaries.  Then, let the smell of the fire entice you into our cozy Visitor’s Center buzzing with activities for all ages.   Enjoy the instrumental sounds of your favorite holiday tunes provided by the Lakewood Jazz Band followed by the smooth harmonies of Land of Legend Barbershop Chorus.  Children’s activities, complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, and a Gift Shop filled with poinsettias and gift ideas are just a taste of what welcomes you indoors.

Take a delightful stroll from the Visitors Center down a luminary-lit path to our Learning Garden and vote your favorite uniquely decorated tree—but don’t stop there!—head over to the classically decorated Daweswood House adorned with white pine roping and elegant red bows. Take in the old fashioned beauty of this historical home warmly lit up for this rare nighttime viewing of the exterior.  Make sure you bring your camera as Flurry the Snowman welcomes you onto the porch for a photo.

A free event, bring your friends and family and join us on this magical night!  In the spirit of the season, we ask that you bring canned food or make a monetary donation to the Licking County Food Bank.

Wow!  With wedding season winding down I have time to sit and reflect about some of the wonderful events we have had and people we have met.  I consider myself blessed to be able to help create so many families’ special days.

Learning Garden with lightsMy brides’ trends this year seemed to be pulling from two distinct areas.  The first seems to be heavily influenced by The Great Gatsby movie scenes.  Soft romantic lighting with colored up lights with dreamy candles adorned the tables.   Cascading arrangements of off white and blush fresh flowers for bouquets, centerpieces and decorations and lamps gave a strong romantic “Gatsby-like” appeal at several of this year’s receptions.  This past summer also continued a version of last year’s trend “shabby chic”.  Several brides have commented they found inspiration from the website Pinterest combining rustic country with a modern “glam” approach.  Clean yet beautiful sunflower and daisy arrangements appeared as centerpieces in mason jars accompanied by the soft glow of candles reflecting off of mirrors.   Burlap mixed with silky and shimmering ribbons were popular in many bouquets and centerpieces.  Long and flowing bolts of fabric as overhead and table decorations were popular with both trends.  I look forward to seeing what the many brides who have booked with us for next summer come up with and helping with the design of their dream day too!

Speaking of next year, the reservations for wedding, receptions, graduation and anniversary parties are off the charts!  I am completely amazed at how quickly dates are filling up and worried for the brides calling in with their hearts set on The Dawes wedding experience and being able to schedule them a date for the ceremony.  The Events Terrace reception space on the hillside is increasingly popular as the view of the sunset is quite breathtaking.  This area is almost sold out for May and June.  I am sad to say the Japanese Garden ceremony site will only be available for the month of June as it will be closed for some much needed restoration after that time.  However, the Dawes Lake Island, All Seasons Garden, Red Barn dock and Memorial area will be in top notch shape to kick off the 2014 wedding and event season.   I am super excited that the garden just to the west corner of the Daweswood House is being renovated as a new ceremony space with manicured flowerbeds on either side of where the guests will sit overlooking the pond; quite a remarkable view that can accommodate 100 guests.   Facility Blog (1)This new area can be paired with an appetizer/dessert mini reception at the Learning Garden terrace; a great addition to our facility rental areas. If you are planning an event of any nature I would love the opportunity to give you a tour of The Arboretum’s rental areas and be a part of your special occasion!
