If you take the Dogwood Trail towards the Log Cabin, you can't miss the large Daddy Long Legs hovering over the walkway! This sculpture is made of red cedar and willow, measures 17' long, 17' wide and 10' high and weighs 600 pounds!
Daddy long legs, also known as harvestmen, are a type of arachnid that belongs to the order Opiliones. While they are related to spiders, they actually are not spiders and there are some distinct differences between them. Unlike spiders, harvestmen do not produce venom or silk. Although they will feed on small prey, they are also scavengers that are happy to feed on dead insects or decaying plant material. They tend to live in humid places and are often found amongst leaf litter on the forest floor.
