The Dawes Arboretum recently partnered with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves Natural Heritage & Scenic Rivers teams to replant the rare western wallflower (Erysimum capitatum). The western wallflower was planted onto protected lands in an ongoing partnership to provide safeguards for rare plants in Ohio.
The western wallflower is an endangered species here in Ohio. The Arboretum grew this plant in our nursery until it was strong enough to plant on a site. The plant has a beautiful yellow/orange flower that blooms around May and June. Our Science & Conservation Team participated in planting several plants at protected areas in Ohio. They hiked to the sites and ensured each plant was well watered while also taking detailed records of the locations. These plants will be monitored by those involved in the process for their success and survival in the upcoming years.
The collaboration between organizations allows for The Arboretum to impact beyond our 2,000 acres to help save species from extinction! We are so excited to be a part of a project that will allow for continued education and aid in the conservation of native species. Together, we can ensure all plants remain present for generations to come!
