Sala Bosworth Art Exhibition to Debut at The Dawes Arboretum and Wind Sculptures extended until October

The Dawes Arboretum, a living tree museum located in Newark providing people of all ages the opportunity to explore the wonderment of nature, year-round, announces its new art exhibition, Ohio Artist Sala Bosworth: The Dawes Family Collection, opening May 1 and the extension of the Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculpture Exhibition.

Sala Bosworth hailed from Marietta, Ohio and was known for painting landscapes and portraits from 1827-1890.  The exhibition, which has a family connection to The Dawes Arboretum, features nine oil and two watercolor paintings and will be held in The Arboretum’s History Center.

“Bosworth’s daughter, Frances, married Ephraim Dawes, the uncle of Beman Dawes, The Dawes Arboretum’s founder,” said Leslie Wagner, historian for The Dawes Arboretum and curator of the exhibition.  “The works on view were all part of the Dawes family’s collection."

The inspiration to display the works of Bosworth came to Wagner from David McCullough’s NY Times Bestseller, The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West. The book features one of Bosworth’s painting, House of Ephraim Cutler, which is part of The Arboretum’s historic collection.

Art can be viewed on The Arboretum grounds as well. The Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculpture Exhibition, featuring 60 kinetic sculptures displayed throughout The Arboretum’s grounds, is extended until Oct. 17.

“Each season, The Arboretum provides a new and stunning backdrop for these inspirational works of art,” said Luke Messinger, Executive Director. “We are very happy to give members and visitors the opportunity to enjoy these sculptures this spring, summer and into the fall.”

Messinger added that spring blooms are in abundance at The Arboretum and by the time the Sala Bosworth exhibition opens, visitors can expect to see a lush variety of colors in the Azalea Glen along with colorful magnolias, cherry trees, woodland wildflowers and a return to the wonderful sounds of birds in spring.

Ohio Artist Sala Bosworth: The Dawes Family Collection and The Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculpture Exhibition are included with general admission to The Dawes Arboretum.

Ohio Artist Sala Bosworth: The Dawes Family Collection will be open May 1 – Oct. 31 from noon – 3 p.m.  Face masks will be required to enter the building and no more than six people admitted at one time.
