As an Arboretum, we continue to explore ways to beautify our grounds and better the environments around us. This goes beyond creating the beautiful gardens that our guests enjoy during their visits.

Beginning on February 21, 2022, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management (The Division) will plug 2 orphaned oil wells at The Arboretum. The first well will be located near Red Barn Reserve and the second is located along Davis Drive. This will return the area to pre-well conditions and further beautify The Arboretum. Work is expected to be completed by the end of April.

Once wells are plugged, The Arboretum and The Division will work in collaboration to revegetate the soil using a new seeding method that will be more beneficial to the plants, animals and wildlife that depend on this habitat. The areas will be seeded with a mixture of native wildflowers and grasses to prevent soil erosion, while also creating resources for the birds, bees and butterflies that rely on these plants to survive. This new approach will demonstrate an improved process for revegetating sites after work has been completed. Applying the native seed method, rather than non-native seed, will show superior soil health, better water absorption and increased pollinator resources while also offering more beautiful and diverse landscapes for visitors

"Proper plugging of orphan wells is necessary to protect public health and safety, conserve natural resources, and allow the efficient development of Ohio’s oil and gas resources," said Eric Vendel, Chief of the Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management.

The work is part of Ohio’s Orphan Well Program and is funded through the state.

Plugging a well is time and labor intensive; heavy equipment will be actively operating, which is why fencing will be placed around the work area to keep everyone away and safe.

Thank you for your patience as this project progresses. This short-term impact will be worth it for years to come.
