The Dawes Arboretum and The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology are partnering to host solar eclipse events in honor of the 2024 total solar eclipse. You are invited to experience “Under the Sun” at The Works on Saturday, April 6 from 11am to 1pm. This event will offer space programming and the ability to learn all about the science behind a solar eclipse. Hands-on activities will also be provided for kids and families.
From here, the “Under the Sun” event will continue at The Arboretum. We will be hosting guests on Monday, April 8, the day of the eclipse, from 2 to 4pm. On our grounds, we will be watching the Moon pass between the Sun and the Earth. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets and solar eclipse viewers. Ernie's Donuts will also be on site. Click here to view the event on our calendar!
The Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks will also be joining us at The Arboretum to present models and images of the earthworks and demonstrate how the patterns of the sun and the moon influenced the construction of said earthworks. They will also be displaying images of other monuments throughout the world that are designed with the celestial bodies in mind.
Each of these occasions are included with the daily admission fees of each organization. However, both events are free to members of The Arboretum and The Works.
Limited supplies of special eclipse glasses will be available. The Arboretum will provide glasses as we host the solar eclipse viewing. The Works will also provide glasses to Works members, one per family, beginning the month of March. These can be picked up at the museum hours leading up to the events. Please note, all eclipse glasses will be provided while supplies last.
We wish to remind you that anyone participating in watching the eclipse should remember that eye protection is required. Looking directly at the sun without protection can result in eye injury. Please use eclipse glasses, viewers, solar filters designed for cameras or pinhole viewers. Please note, solar viewers should meet the ISO 12312- 2 international safety standard.
