The Dawes Arboretum and event co-chairs Mary Jane Bolon and Debby Dawes Fortkamp are pleased to host Bertie’s Tea with a presentation by Debra Knapke, The Garden Sage, discussing “What Plants Mean to Us: Traditions, Language and Stories.” Meanings, memories and stories, the intangible aspects of our gardens, tell the tale of our lives. When we plant a tree or flower because of what it symbolizes, or we add plants given to us by friends, we are celebrating and remembering events and people in our lives. Like all of us, Bertie had her favorite plants. Join us to hear her stories and to learn more about the wonderful variety of plants of meaning at The Dawes Arboretum.
Dawes Arboretum co-founder Bertie Dawes was an avid gardener and self-taught naturalist. She kept detailed journals where she recorded her observations of the natural world. These journals document the changes of seasons, flowers planted in her garden, butterflies she appreciated and the birds that graced her landscapes. We hope you will join us to celebrate her legacy.
