Travel back in time on this guided tour as the fascinating history of maple syrup production is revealed.  A warm fire, lots of sweet smelling steam, and samples of syrup await visitors at the journey’s end.  Groups can book tours through the Education Department, call to set up a tour today!

See and hear the history behind antiques and memorabilia from the Dawes family. A house highlight is the "Rathskeller," a basement area that displays shovels used by 100 notable men and women who dedicated trees at The Arboretum and features their initials and signatures on the ceiling.

Learn about the production of maple syrup at The Dawes Arboretum.

Join other home school students in exploration of our natural world. Each 90-minute session begins in the Discovery Center (unless noted otherwise) and includes a hands-on science study correlated with Ohio's New Learning Standards. Sessions are for ages 6 to 10 and cost $5 per student. Classes are held the first and third Tuesday of the month from September through April.

Wildlife Structures Workshop: A Home for Eastern Bluebirds

Eastern Bluebirds are a familiar and favorite site across Ohio.  These cheerful birds grace us with activity all summer long.  While they don't often visit feeders, they are a great prospect for nest boxes.  In this workshop, learn the dos and don'ts of box construction and build one to take home.  Bluebird life history and ways staff and volunteers at The Arboretum support and monitor their populations is also part of the discussion.

Cub Scout Hiking Belt Loop & Pin

After covering hiking safety rules, participants are guided along The Arboretum trails to identify basic plants and birds.  Session includes practice in using a compass and a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.  Participation completes requirements for the Hiking Belt Loop and Sports Pin.

Night Hike

This hike guides participants through several natural areas near wet fields, where the group may catch a glimpse of the Woodcocks' fascinating courtship display.  On the 3rd Friday of each month, join our team of educators and volunteers for a guided hike on our main grounds, after hours. Search for night time critters and look for stars, as daylight fades and your senses change. Each season brings something new to see and hear.

Spring Migratory Bird Series - Dutch Fork Wetlands
