Storybook Science - The Surprise Garden

Girl Scouts: Arbor Day Overnight & Service Opportunity

Spend the night camping near the Red Barn at the Dawes Arboretum. Get up early to help prepare for the Arbor Day Festival. This is a great service learning opportunity combined with a fun overnight and a day filled with tons of activities. Participants will need to provide their own tents and gear. An evening snack and breakfast will be provided. Overnight option available to Juniors and older.  To register, visit the Girl Scouts at www.gsoh.org or call 800.621.7042.  Girls need not be affiliated with a traditional troop to participate.

Arbor Day Festival

It’s Arbor Day - a celebration of trees and nature! Expect a fun-filled day with lots of hands-on learning opportunities for families including crafts, displays and tree climbing. The festival features The Turtle Lady and her amazing reptile and amphibian friends! Performances are 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3pm.  The Arboretum is showcasing a plant sale offering a variety of nursery plants. The first 250 families have an opportunity to take home their own tree, to plant in honor of Arbor Day. Presented by Park National Bank. Media sponsor is Ohio Magazine.

Home School Investigations: Pollinators At Work

Learn how bees, butterflies and birds all help with pollination.  Join other home school students in exploration of our natural world. Each 90-minute session begins in the Discovery Center Library and includes a hands-on science study correlated with the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Life Sciences. Planting History: A Bertie Dawes Inspired Garden

Take part in planting history as we replant Bertie’s Garden: a garden based on plants Arboretum co-founder Bertie Dawes cherished and documented in her journals. Join the garden’s designer Laura Burchfield, author of American Home Landscapes: A Design Guide to Creating Period Garden Styles, as you learn about her research into Bertie’s passion for gardening and take part in helping to recreate this special space. It’s a hands-on learning experience you don’t want to miss!  Session includes a pizza lunch after planting.  *Rain date is May 6, 2014.

The Silk Scarf Project: Dyeing with Plants

Sign up for this creative two-part workshop where participants use a pounding technique to extract dyes from plants onto silk, resulting in colorful scarves that are sure to be the envy of the neighborhood.  (Men are also encouraged to attend; alternatively dying silk handkerchiefs instead of scarves.)  Ingredients are seasonal plant parts including flowers, leaves, berries, and roots.  After a soaking period, one-of-a-kind masterpieces are exposed!  The session explores techniques on locking in the magnificent colors achieved from pounding methods the week before.

The Silk Scarf Journey Continues: Advanced Dyeing Technique

This two-session program is for those who have already participated in the Silk Scarf Project and want to expand practice with less instructor interference.  First, learn an advanced dyeing technique, choose between silk scarves and silk handkerchiefs then use Arboretum plant materials and let imagination runs wild.

Silk may be purchased in class payable at first session (approximately $4/scarf, $3/pocket square).  Students may make up to six pieces.  *Upon registration, each attendee will receive a packet of information by mail or email with more details about the class.

Merchants and professionals offer wares and services in all areas of gardening, landscaping and home décor.  Choose from an assortment of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables.  Our plant experts are always on hand to help you choose the best plants for your outdoor spaces.  Wagons are available to transport your treasures. Lunch is available for purchase.  Proceeds from the sale benefit The Arboretum’s collections and grounds.

Training Young Trees

Achieving a strong structure in a young tree in the first five to seven years is critical to ensure a healthy tree.   For this to happen, a young tree should be visited at least once per year so decisions can be made and action taken to direct proper development.  Horticulture staff reveals how these pruning decisions are made in the care of these plants.  Learn how to prune as well as become proficient determining how best to direct the development of a young tree.

Join Krista Horrocks, professional archaeologist at Lawhon & Associates, as she shares the history of the cemetery and showcases its unique headstones though symbolism found on the stones, carvers and the people buried.  Learn how gravestone symbology reflected the ideals of the time and how the meaning and interpretation still holds true today.  Participants meet at the Visitors Center and will travel over to the cemetery by a narrated wagon tour.

Daweswood House Museum Tours

Take a guided tour of the Daweswood House Museum, once the country home of Arboretum co-founders, the late Beman and Bertie Dawes. See and hear the history behind antiques and memorabilia from the Dawes family. A house highlight is the "Rathskeller," a basement area that displays shovels used by 100 notable men and women who dedicated trees at The Arboretum and features their initials and signatures on the ceiling. Purchase tickets in the Visitors Center.  Meet at the Daweswood House front porch for tour.
